Apple have just announced their brand new iPhone at WWDC 2010, imaginatively named iPhone 4, just that, no iPhone 4G or iPhone HD – and yes, it would appear to be the iPhone 4G prototype model that we’ve all seen leaked by Gizmodo!

Hardware Design

At the announcement, Steve Jobs said that the new iPhone 4 brings over 100 new features to the table, focusing on just a few for the keynote. The casing is made from glass at the front and back, with steel around the sides and this new design makes it the “thinnest smartphone on the planet” at just 9.3mm.

It comes packed with a front facing camera, and a rear camera too. Also, there’s an LED flash on the back, so you can take photos in low light conditions!

It uses the same microSIM tray as the Apple iPad, so you won’t be able to put your own SIM in it unless you cut it down to size yourself.

You’ll also find a second microphone for noise cancellation which is great for calls in loud places, similar to what Google’s Nexus One Android phone has.

A lot of people were curious about the line at the top of the device, as it’s seldom seen with Apple’s focus on ‘unibody’ design. The reason for this is to use the band as part of the antenna system to improve the effectiveness for signal reception. What does this mean? Well, you might actually be able to make calls for starters! Assuming that works well, that’ll definitely a good improvement.

Apple iPhone 4 Smartphone Screen

The second big feature in the new iPhone 4 model is what Apple call a ‘Retina Display’, which offers four times as many pixels on the screen, to make it a much sharper screen than previous generations. Steve Jobs actually did a live demonstration of the new screen technology using a 3GS and an iPhone 4, and the difference was pretty striking.

Note the difference, with the 3GS image on the left and the iPhone 4 on the right. The iPhone 4 packs 960 x 640 pixels on the 3.5” display, which is a huge improvement over the 3GS.

Internal Hardware

The iPhone is powered by Apple’s own A4 chip – the same chip that’s used in the iPad – and packs a lot of hardware in such a small case. The battery dominates the case, so they’re squeezing as much power as possible.

It will come with up to 32GB of storage and 802.11n WiFi built in. A new addition not seen in previous iPhones is a 3 axis gyro, which is tied in with the accelerometer and compass to offer six axis control. Jobs did a demo of a simple 3D game with a stack of blocks, and the gyro seemed to be impressive for gaming purposes. It’ll be great to see games on the App Store that take advantage of the new hardware.

New Camera System

iPhone 4 comes with a new camera system that aims to take better pictures, particularly in low light. There’s now a 5 megapixel sensor in the device, but the big difference here is the backside illuminated sensor. 5X digital zoom is also offered, and, of course, it will utilise that LED flash they’ve put in.

So it’s great for taking still pictures, but what about video? You’ll be able to record 720p video at 30 fps, which is great for a mobile device! To take video even further on the iPhone, Apple have even created iMovie for iPhone to allow you to edit your video content without having to transfer them to your computer.

iPhone OS (iOS) 4.0 software update

You may be wondering what ‘iOS’ is… turns out, Apple ditched the ‘Phone’ part and renamed the operating system. Unfortunately, that’s the only thing that’s changed on the OS front, no new features except for what we already know were announced for the iPhone OS (iOS) 4.0 update, although Apple have officially added Bing to their list of search providers on the OS, with Steve saying “Microsoft has done a great job on this” (who’d have thought we’d ever hear that?). You can expect to see the iOS 4 software update released on 21st June 2010.

Video Calling

You know there’s a reason to be excited when Steve Jobs says there’s “One more thing…”. Steve did a live demonstration of a video call using the iPhone’s front facing camera to call Jony Ive. This is a great addition to the iPhone, and a wished-for feature from many users.

The service is called FaceTime, and only works over WiFi at the moment, but it’s a great advancement. Of course, iPhone 4 is required too.

Smartphone Apple iPhone 4 Availability

iPhone 4 looks like the best iPhone to date, with a much needed update to the look of the device. It’s available in both white and black, with a 16GB version costing $199 and a 32GB costing $299 on 2 year US mobile phone contracts. Pre-orders start June 15th, and it becomes available on June 24th.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the various iPhone mobile networks here in the UK, presumably they’ll end up being quite similar prices again, but I wonder how long us PAYG iPhone customers will have to wait until we can buy one without a contract?

Smartphones Nokia N900 vs The iPhone 3GS. The N900 has a touch screen interface and so does the iPhone 3GS but the big difference that stands out is that the iPhone screen allows all functions to be accessed by touch.

The iPhone 3GS, for instance, was launched in the U.S. in June 2009. It only officially arrived in India in March 2010 but is still not easily available as it is locked by the operators – Vodafone and Bharti Airtel – and has to be bought through them.

Forget about the iPad and the iPhone 4. The latter was launched globally earlier this week. The former already has reached sales of more than 2 million, but not in India. Neither is officially available here, in part because India is only now getting around to 3G so its networks aren’t robust enough to support the latest gadgets.

Still, at least there is now some choice for the gadget-minded. Indian device leader Nokia (its India handset market share in 2009 stood at 59%), last week launched the N900 in India, a device that directly competes with the iPhone 3GS available here.

IndiaRealTime brings a quick comparison of the specs for the two devices for those inclined to keep up with the latest technology fads.

On price, the N900 retails for around 30,600 rupees while the iPhone ranges between 32,000 and 39,000 rupees.

Both phones support 2G and 3G networks. But the N900 has High-Speed Downlink Packet Access that gives a higher data transfer speed of 900/1700/2100 compared with iPhone 3G’s HSDPA of 850/1900/2100. The 3G network speed of the N900 is up to 10Mbps, compared with the iPhone’s 7.2Mbps.

Both phones come equipped with Wireless Local Area Network connectivity. But the N900’s connectivity includes a Digital Living Network Alliance, a standard used by manufacturers of consumer electronics to allow entertainment devices within the home to share their content with each other across a home network. This feature is not available in the iPhone 3GS.

For better sharing of images, videos, contacts etc., the N900 has infrared availability; the iPhone 3GS does not.

When it comes to picture and sound quality, the N900 has a display screen of 800 X 480 pixels, while the iPhone has a 480 X 320 pixel screen. The iPhone 3GS is lighter at 137 grams compared with the N900’s 181 grams. But N900’s speakers have stereo availability compared with the iPhone 3GS’s single speaker.

The N900 has a touch screen interface and so does the iPhone 3GS but the big difference that stands out is that the iPhone screen allows all functions to be accessed by touch. The multi-touch interface of the iPhone 3GS enables users to scroll through the phone with just a tap, be it zooming in on photos or just going through songs, while this feature is not available in the N900. But the N900 has a 5.8 mega pixel Carl Zeiss lens camera compared to the iPhone 3GS’s 3 mega pixel camera. No doubt the iPhone 4 will introduce a whole new set of dynamics when it comes here but, for now, the N900 will give the iPhone a serious run for its money.

Smartphones beat recession, Nokia still on top. Nokia’s smartphones may not get the same adulation as Android phones, the iPhone, or the Pre, but that doesn’t appear to be hurting the company. Despite the recession, smartphone shipments grew last quarter, and Nokia grew as well.

There are a few consumer markets that are surprisingly robust, despite rising unemployment and a fragile economy. One of of these markets is apparently shoes, and the other is smartphones. For a gadget that not only costs a chunk of change up front, but also ties you into a costly service contract with a mobile provider that you may even despise at the time of purchase, it’s hard to see how the smartphone could’ve made anybody’s list of “Most Likely to Beat the Recession.” But if IDC’s latest shipment numbers are to be believed, the smartphone posted robust 4.2 percent year-over-year shipment growth in the third quarter of 2009.

Nokia came in at the top of the heap in terms of market share (37.9 percent) and shipping volume (16.4 million units), and second in terms of year-over-year growth (6.6 percent). The phone maker’s numbers were no doubt buoyed by the launch of the N97.

The next largest smartphone maker by market share and volume was also the one that saw the most spectacular year-over-year growth—and no, the company doesn’t doesn’t have the name of a certain fruit. We’re talking about RIM, which saw a whopping 37.5 percent year-over-year growth in shipments. The Blackberry Curve and Tour were apparently on fire this past quarter, especially in North America.

Apple was a very distant third behind RIM in the growth category and in market share, with 7 percent year-over-year growth, most of which was attributable to the strong iPhone 3GS launch. Still, Apple’s success comes in spite of the fact that the iPhone is still relatively pricey, and it’s tied to a single carrier in the US (AT&T) that many are reluctant to switch to because of coverage and service quality issues.

HTC actually posted the second best growth numbers, with 14.7 percent year-over-year growth. Once the maker of the vast majority of Windows Mobile phones, HTC has become a big Android backer of late. With Windows Mobile’s marketshare languishing in the single digits this year, it’s clear that HTC’s growth is coming not from Redmond but from Mountain View.

Rounding out the bottom of the list was Samsung, which saw its shipping volume stay flat year-over-year.

As for the other guys, they collectively saw their volumes decline by over 23 percent from last year, which indicates that the big movers (RIM and HTC) are leeching customers from everyone else.

So the Curve strategy seems to be working. Not really feeling the purple. I guess some will like it, but not for me. It goes to show how mainstream blackberries have come though, as purple doesn’t exactly shout professionalism. I hope the retail price is low. After making its appearance at Verizon earlier today, Sprint also announced that the BlackBerry Curve 8530 smartphone is coming soon to its lineup as well. Potential customers can register now to receive updates on the handset. Preloaded apps are the primary difference for Sprint’s Curve 8530 and include the Sprint Music Store, Sprint TV and Pandora radio.

The 8530 is RIM’s entry-level media smartphone with dedicated music controls and quicker access to Facebook, MySpace and Flickr. Otherwise, the device has 3G EVDO network support, Wi-Fi, GPS and the by now de facto trackpad in place of a trackball. It cuts costs with a 320×240 display and a 2-megapixel camera.

Sprint will offer the BlackBerry Curve 8530 in black, purple and red. Pricing and a release date for the Sprint edition haven’t yet been announced.

T-Mobile BlackBerry Bold 9700 3G Smartphone Review. T-Mobile BlackBerry Bold 9700 Hardware Tour and Unboxing. The new BlackBerry Bold 9700 will replace Research in Motion’s flagship BlackBerry Bold 9000. The new Bold 9700 sports a more modern, compact form factor than the Bold it replaces. Unlike the predecessor, which was only available on AT&T’s 3G network, the Bold 9700 will be available on AT&T and T-Mobile’s budding 3G data networks. The 9700 sports a design that is reminiscent of a leaner, less wide BlackBerry Tour, currently offered on Verizon Wireless and Sprint; the device will be available on T-Mobile and AT&T later this month for $200 on contract and with rebates for AT&T.

T-Mobile BlackBerry Bold 9700 3G Smartphone Review. The new Bold 9700′s compact form factor doesn’t come without a cost. The downside to the sleek build is that Research in Motion had to to trim the screen down–from 2.6-inch to 2.44-inch–and the keyboard is a little more cramped, but still very much usable and very comfortable to type on. However, like all BlackBerry, the keyboard is still the hallmark of the device and it will get you through emails and messages like a champ. The battery life goes for an astounding 6 hours of talk time and can play music for 38 hours according to RIM; in actual use, I got about two days of light to moderate calling and heavy emailing without needing a charge. The compact screen means that everything looks a little more sharp on the 480 X 360 resolution display. The speaker is loud and clear and I had no problems with call quality or signal strength on T-Mobile’s wireless 3G network.

If you’re in an area with bad T-Mobile coverage, the T-Mobile edition of the Bold 9700 supports UMA calling so you can use it with a Hotspot @Home service or your router and make calls over WiFi, like a VOIP call. Essentially, you’re using your home network as a cell tower to alleviate the signal strength issue, if any. Along with WiFi and 3G, you also get Bluetooth, GPS, and an optical trackpad that replaces the trackball found on the older Bold 9000.

Build quality is solid. One minor concern that I did have in the video, which isn’t explained, is that I thought the four navigation keys surrounding the optical trackpad were attached–the Call Send seemed to be attached to the BlackBerry button while the Back button seemed to be attached to the End button via a small plastic connector. I heard a snap in testing the device when pressing down too hard on one of the four navigation buttons. However, that had no effect on performance. Additionally, it would have been nice if RIM used a rubberized material for the back of the device–the matte plastic, although nice, doesn’t feel as luxurious for a flagship 3G QWERTY model.

A video tour of BlackBerry OS 5 will be coming out shortly to note some of the differences and improvements on the software side. Stay tuned.

LG to Launch Android Based SnapDragon SmartPhone 2010, LG to announce Snapdragon-boasting Android phone, Korea-bound in 2010. LG Snapdragon Android smartphone is set to launch in about 5 – 6 months time in Q2 of 2010. Other than known what OS it will run and that it will be powered by a SnapDragon processor, there isn’t really anything known just yet.

LG have commented that the phone will be a more mature device than the LG GW620 that was recently launched.

The phone isn’t planned to leave Korea when launched although there is a slight possibility. I expect if it is to be a snapdragon Android based phone that it will run Android 2.0+ that will include Google Maps Navigation if available in Korea at that time.

No doubt we will hear more of this phone over the next few weeks and months, but for now it’s nothing to really get excited about.

LG has just announced that it’ll start selling a Snapdragon-based Android phone in Q2 2010, debuting on the Korean market. The specifications of this device are not known yet, but the company’s VP claims that the handset will be more “mature” than LG GW620 Eve, the phone maker’s first Android phone.

Expect mobile digital TV technology to be on board, at least in the Asian version of the handset. We sure hope that the device will make it out of Korea and reach the US and Europe, where it’ll be a suitable rival for Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 and Motorola Droid.

The BlackBerry Curve 8530 smartphone is expected to be available from Verizon Wireless beginning Nov. 20 for $99.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate with a new two-year customer agreement on a voice plan with an Email and Web feature or an Email and Web for BlackBerry plan. Customers will receive the mail-in rebate in the form of a debit card; upon receipt, customers may use the card as cash anywhere debit cards are accepted. Data plans for the BlackBerry Curve 8530 smartphone begin at $29.99 when added to any Nationwide voice plan.

The BlackBerry Curve 8530 features a full QWERTY keyboard with a touch sensitive track pad, 256 MB of flash memory and a 528 MHz processor, it also has Bluetooth 2.1, WiFi and 3G.

Othere specification include GPS, a 2,0 megapixel camera with built in digital zoom for recording video and taking pictures, an advanced media player for music, pictures and video, with dedicated media keys and a 3.5mm audio jack.

The Verizon BlackBerry Curve 8530 Smartphone will be available from the 20th of November for $99 with a 24 month contract after a $100 mail in rebate, it will come in a choice of two colors, black and smoky violet.

The LiMo Foundation announces the second LiMo compliant device built using the LiMo Platform Release 2 in the form of the new Vodafone 360 Samsung M1 handset. This latest Samsung handset features Vodafone’s customizable 360 user interface which provides “a new set of Internet services for the mobile and PC that gathers all of a customer’s friends, communities, entertainment, and personal favorites in one place.”

For those of you not familiar with the LiMo Foundation, the organization was launched in January of 2007 to provide an open and consistent Mobile Linux-based handset operating system. According to their press release, there are now 44 commercially available LiMo-based handsets.

Meet the H1′s little brother

The LiMo Foundation has announced the official arrival of the Samsung M1 handset, baby brother to the H1, which provides a more affordable way to get a hold of the Vodafone 360 service.

Announced in September, the Vodafone 360 service is a Linux-based OS created by the LiMo foundation. Its party tricks include the ability to turn back time to view previous communications on a certain date, a contacts database that synchronises all of your social networks and an automated back-up of all your contacts, photos and emails online.

The M1 comes with a 3.2 TFT touchscreen, 1GB internal storage (expandable through a microSD card slot), HSDPA internet, integrated GPS, push email and a 3.0-megapixel camera with 8x digital zoom.

With significantly less impressive specs than the H1, we expect the M1 to have a much more wallet-friendly price tag, which Vodafone hopes will expand the number of people using its new OS. Unfortunately, the network is yet to reveal the release date or the price.

According to the LiMo Foundation the arrival of the M1 will bring the number of “commercially available LiMo-based handsets” to 44, though the number actually carrying Vodafone 360 in the UK is much lower.

Sony-Ericsson Kurara cell phone has a 8.1 megapixel digital camera, Sony-Ericsson Kurara cell phone promises HD video capabilities and with a 3.5 inch AMOLED touchscreen display.

A spy-picture of the new device from Sony Ericsson was spotted on the web a few weeks ago. It’s Kurara. Sony Ericsson Kurara is Entertainment Unlimited device and based on Symbian Foundation platfom (Symbian S60). As you can see from the image, Kurara has a large display. Probably 3.5″ or less. The phone has a 8.1 megapixel camera. Yet there is no info about annoucement date. Probably release of Sony Ericsson Kurara will be in the first half of 2010.

As previously reported, the Sony Ericsson Kurara is a smartphone based on Symbian S60 5th Edition and it should be included in SE’s Entertainment Unlimited line-up (like the Satio and Aino).

The features of Sony Ericsson Kurara apparently include a 3.5 inch AMOLED touchscreen display and an 8.1MP camera (which, judging by the HD seen on the phone’s back, should be able to record video in HD).

In other SE news, it looks like the Swedish-Japanese company is also readying a new Symbian S60 smartphone (like the Satio), currently codenamed Sony Ericsson Kurara.

According to the Semc blog, Kurara is a full-touch handset with a large display (possibly a 3.5 inch one) and an 8.1MP camera. The two photos below are the only ones available at the moment.

Note: Kurara is just internal codename, not commercial name. The Kurara should be announced in the first half of 2010, probably under a different name.

The KODAK ESP 5250 AiO Printer, available since September 2009, is the latest in Kodak’s range of AiO consumer printers. Kodak printers, including the KODAK ESP 5250, produce lab-quality, long-lasting photos and documents.

The WiFi-enabled AiO printer retails for $159.99 and features a 2.4” color LCD display panel to easily view and crop images along with built-in memory card compatibility. The wireless KODAK W1020 Wireless Digital Frame can hold up to 4,000 photos and can display and play pictures, video and audio clips. The 10” W1020 retails for $229.95.
