Nokia 5800 XpressMusic was available in Europe since last year, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phones launched in USA in March of 2009. At last, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic was just launched in South Korea – as the country’s second 3G Nokia phone (after the Nokia 6210s released back in April).

The 5800 was launched via KT, South Korea’s second largest mobile carrier, and it’s available in two colors versions (red black and silver black), for 550,000 KRW (about $474).

The 5800 XpressMusic features Symbian S50 5th Edition, a 3.2 inch touchscreen display with 360 x 640 pixels and 16 million colors, Wi-Fi, 3.2MP camera, MicroSD card support and a 3.5mm headset jack (a feature that you can rarely find in the phones sold in Korea).

Verizon Wireless: Motorola Droid OTA Update problem. Motorola Droid OTA Update Coming December 11th? The Motorola Droid was launched less than a week ago but we’re already eying a December 11th OTA update that will cure a defined list of software issues. Defined by who, you ask? Verizon Wireless themselves. An anonymous tipster has sent us an internal 5-page document detailing problems with the Droid, something they claim was furnished to all Verizon Tech Support reps. The tipster claims a December 11th OTA update will fix the problems.

Before we get to the details I would like to make 2 points:

1. Don’t be irritated that there are so many problems, instead be grateful that Verizon/Motorola/Google are meticulously tracking all of the known issues and working hard to release an OTA fix for them. Pretty amazing that we’re able to get such a quick turn around time in the first place. If an OTA update comes on December 11th that would be pretty impressive indeed.
2. The only reason that so many problems exist is that your phone has so many capabilities. If all it did was call people… it would work flawlessly. With more features come more areas for potential bugs. And there are a LOT of features in Android. I’m not so much concerned with the bugs as much as how they are addressed and if the documents below are any indication… these folks are really on the ball.

And here you go:

Notice the last page of the document details camera auto-focus problem with a targeted resolution date of December 11th but just above that we see bluetooth issues with a target resolution date of January 2010 – we’re not sure if there will there be 2 updates in 2 months or if their target date is just THAT flimsy – but either way it’s apparent SOMETHING is coming down the pike.

Are you experiencing problems with your Droid? Is your issue on this list? If so – are you happy? If not – share it below!

Smartphones beat recession, Nokia still on top. Nokia’s smartphones may not get the same adulation as Android phones, the iPhone, or the Pre, but that doesn’t appear to be hurting the company. Despite the recession, smartphone shipments grew last quarter, and Nokia grew as well.

There are a few consumer markets that are surprisingly robust, despite rising unemployment and a fragile economy. One of of these markets is apparently shoes, and the other is smartphones. For a gadget that not only costs a chunk of change up front, but also ties you into a costly service contract with a mobile provider that you may even despise at the time of purchase, it’s hard to see how the smartphone could’ve made anybody’s list of “Most Likely to Beat the Recession.” But if IDC’s latest shipment numbers are to be believed, the smartphone posted robust 4.2 percent year-over-year shipment growth in the third quarter of 2009.

Nokia came in at the top of the heap in terms of market share (37.9 percent) and shipping volume (16.4 million units), and second in terms of year-over-year growth (6.6 percent). The phone maker’s numbers were no doubt buoyed by the launch of the N97.

The next largest smartphone maker by market share and volume was also the one that saw the most spectacular year-over-year growth—and no, the company doesn’t doesn’t have the name of a certain fruit. We’re talking about RIM, which saw a whopping 37.5 percent year-over-year growth in shipments. The Blackberry Curve and Tour were apparently on fire this past quarter, especially in North America.

Apple was a very distant third behind RIM in the growth category and in market share, with 7 percent year-over-year growth, most of which was attributable to the strong iPhone 3GS launch. Still, Apple’s success comes in spite of the fact that the iPhone is still relatively pricey, and it’s tied to a single carrier in the US (AT&T) that many are reluctant to switch to because of coverage and service quality issues.

HTC actually posted the second best growth numbers, with 14.7 percent year-over-year growth. Once the maker of the vast majority of Windows Mobile phones, HTC has become a big Android backer of late. With Windows Mobile’s marketshare languishing in the single digits this year, it’s clear that HTC’s growth is coming not from Redmond but from Mountain View.

Rounding out the bottom of the list was Samsung, which saw its shipping volume stay flat year-over-year.

As for the other guys, they collectively saw their volumes decline by over 23 percent from last year, which indicates that the big movers (RIM and HTC) are leeching customers from everyone else.

Verizon Puts the iPhone on the Island of Misfit Toys. VERIZON TAKES ANOTHER SWING AT AT&T, PUTS IPHONE ON THE ISLAND OF MISFIT TOYS. Verizon Wireless’ TV ad campaign attacking the Apple iPhone continues. The latest commercial evokes a holiday classic, with the iPhone appearing on the Island of Misfit Toys.

Verizon has been running a series of ads comparing its phones and wireless service to AT&T’s. Many of these have centered around Verizon’s larger mobile broadband service area, and the latest, “Misfit Toys”, does as well.

This is a reference to the Rankin/Bass Christmas special “Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer.” The Island of Misfit Toys is where toys go because no child can love them.

There’s a Lawsuit for that
The first commercial in this series, “There’s a Map for That”, sparked a lawsuit between these two carriers. This ad shows a pair of maps comparing the 3G coverage area for both carriers. AT&T claims this is misleading potential customers because they might think that it’s a coverage map for its voice service, too.

Verizon 3G CoverageVerizon is still using the maps in commercials, but it now includes a note specifying that they just show 3G service, and that AT&T offers other voice and 2.5G data service outside of the areas highlighted.

Signaling No iPhone for Verizon?
This isn’t the first in this series to be very unflattering to the iPhone; Verizon’s first TV ad for the Motorola Droid pointed out the features in this new Android-powered model that aren’t in the iPhone, like a hardware keyboard.

In the past year, there have been rumors that Apple and Verizon are in negotiations to bring the iPhone to this carrier’s product lineup. Some has wondered if Verizon would be running ads that directly attack Apple’s smartphone if it is going to be offering it next year.

The Sprint BlackBerry Curve 8530 cell phone has two colors: royal purple and black. The Sprint Curve 8530 is an optical trackpad and support WiFi. The God-awful “royal purple” colour detracts from the beauty of the phone. I bet Sprint is hoping that it can lure women. So the Curve strategy seems to be working. Not really feeling the purple. I guess some will like it, but not for me. It goes to show how mainstream blackberries have come though, as purple doesn’t exactly shout professionalism. I hope the retail price is low. TheSprint BlackBerry Curve 8530 cell phone will be available on November 20 2009 for $99.99 on contract after rebate.

After making its appearance at Verizon earlier today, Sprint also announced that the BlackBerry Curve 8530 smartphone is coming soon to its lineup as well. Potential customers can register now to receive updates on the handset. Preloaded apps are the primary difference for Sprint’s Curve 8530 and include the Sprint Music Store, Sprint TV and Pandora radio.

The 8530 is RIM’s entry-level media smartphone with dedicated music controls and quicker access to Facebook, MySpace and Flickr. Otherwise, the device has 3G EVDO network support, Wi-Fi, GPS and the by now de facto trackpad in place of a trackball. It cuts costs with a 320×240 display and a 2-megapixel camera.

Sprint will offer the BlackBerry Curve 8530 in black, purple and red. Pricing and a release date for the Sprint edition haven’t yet been announced.

T-Mobile BlackBerry Bold 9700 3G Smartphone Review. T-Mobile BlackBerry Bold 9700 Hardware Tour and Unboxing. The new BlackBerry Bold 9700 will replace Research in Motion’s flagship BlackBerry Bold 9000. The new Bold 9700 sports a more modern, compact form factor than the Bold it replaces. Unlike the predecessor, which was only available on AT&T’s 3G network, the Bold 9700 will be available on AT&T and T-Mobile’s budding 3G data networks. The 9700 sports a design that is reminiscent of a leaner, less wide BlackBerry Tour, currently offered on Verizon Wireless and Sprint; the device will be available on T-Mobile and AT&T later this month for $200 on contract and with rebates for AT&T.

T-Mobile BlackBerry Bold 9700 3G Smartphone Review. The new Bold 9700’s compact form factor doesn’t come without a cost. The downside to the sleek build is that Research in Motion had to to trim the screen down–from 2.6-inch to 2.44-inch–and the keyboard is a little more cramped, but still very much usable and very comfortable to type on. However, like all BlackBerry, the keyboard is still the hallmark of the device and it will get you through emails and messages like a champ. The battery life goes for an astounding 6 hours of talk time and can play music for 38 hours according to RIM; in actual use, I got about two days of light to moderate calling and heavy emailing without needing a charge. The compact screen means that everything looks a little more sharp on the 480 X 360 resolution display. The speaker is loud and clear and I had no problems with call quality or signal strength on T-Mobile’s wireless 3G network.

If you’re in an area with bad T-Mobile coverage, the T-Mobile edition of the Bold 9700 supports UMA calling so you can use it with a Hotspot @Home service or your router and make calls over WiFi, like a VOIP call. Essentially, you’re using your home network as a cell tower to alleviate the signal strength issue, if any. Along with WiFi and 3G, you also get Bluetooth, GPS, and an optical trackpad that replaces the trackball found on the older Bold 9000.

Build quality is solid. One minor concern that I did have in the video, which isn’t explained, is that I thought the four navigation keys surrounding the optical trackpad were attached–the Call Send seemed to be attached to the BlackBerry button while the Back button seemed to be attached to the End button via a small plastic connector. I heard a snap in testing the device when pressing down too hard on one of the four navigation buttons. However, that had no effect on performance. Additionally, it would have been nice if RIM used a rubberized material for the back of the device–the matte plastic, although nice, doesn’t feel as luxurious for a flagship 3G QWERTY model.

A video tour of BlackBerry OS 5 will be coming out shortly to note some of the differences and improvements on the software side. Stay tuned.

Hybrid World-Mode iPhone: Apple is Rumored to be Working on Hybrid World-Mode iPhone, With the Verizon Droid receiving a majority of the publicity in the world of technology this past week, rumors as swirling about how Apple plans to counter-act the Droid.

While some people appeared to be under the impression that Verizon’s cutting-edge Droid phones would jeopardize and rival the long-term popularity of Apple iPhone’s, CNet.com is reporting that early Droid sales indicate that it is cutting into the popularity of Blackberry phones more so than iPhones. There are rumors currently circulating that indicate the potential creation of a Verizon iPhone that would be introduced to the market in the third quarter of next year.

The Apple Insider Blog has shed light on this new phone that is sure to generate a great deal of attention amongst Verizon customers. Apple is planning on developing a hybrid, world-mode iPhone that could be distributed as a single global handset to all carriers in the United States, including Verizon. The cutting-edge hybrid iPhone would be compatible with the CDMA and GSM/UMTS systems as opposed to just the GSM/UMTS systems, which is currently the predicament that Apple finds itself in with its current iPhone models.

While no official comment has been provided by Apple or Verizon in response to rumors over the creation of a hybrid, world-mode iPhone, CNet.com is speculating that it would become the most anticipated smartphone to hit the market in history.

Samsung announces new .6mm-thick NAND memory package for smartphones, Samsung world’s thinnest NAND memory package for smartphones measures a mere .6mm in height and contains 32GB of storage.

Samsung announced that it has produced the world’s thinnest multi-chip memory package for smartphones, portable media players, and other devices. The package measures a mere .6mm in height and contains 32GB of storage. Samsung’s new product is 40% thinner and lighter than currently available memory packages.

The .6mm-package contains eight 30nm, 32Gb NAND flash chips, each measuring only 15um (.015mm) thick. This super thin multi-die memory package overcomes the conventional technology limits of a chip’s resistance to external pressure when under 30um in height, and will allow for double the density of previous multi-chip packages, according to Samsung. The company has not publicly named any customers for the new product, but I imagine they’ll find a home in various gadgets soon enough.

Research from iSuppli suggests that demand for memory cards of 2GB densities and higher will grow from 310 million units in 2009 to 7.7 billion units by 2012. The outfit also estimates demand for memory cards 16GB and higher to be 35 million units this year, and 530 million by 2012 — a 15-fold growth.

LG to Launch Android Based SnapDragon SmartPhone 2010, LG to announce Snapdragon-boasting Android phone, Korea-bound in 2010. LG Snapdragon Android smartphone is set to launch in about 5 – 6 months time in Q2 of 2010. Other than known what OS it will run and that it will be powered by a SnapDragon processor, there isn’t really anything known just yet.

LG have commented that the phone will be a more mature device than the LG GW620 that was recently launched.

The phone isn’t planned to leave Korea when launched although there is a slight possibility. I expect if it is to be a snapdragon Android based phone that it will run Android 2.0+ that will include Google Maps Navigation if available in Korea at that time.

No doubt we will hear more of this phone over the next few weeks and months, but for now it’s nothing to really get excited about.

LG has just announced that it’ll start selling a Snapdragon-based Android phone in Q2 2010, debuting on the Korean market. The specifications of this device are not known yet, but the company’s VP claims that the handset will be more “mature” than LG GW620 Eve, the phone maker’s first Android phone.

Expect mobile digital TV technology to be on board, at least in the Asian version of the handset. We sure hope that the device will make it out of Korea and reach the US and Europe, where it’ll be a suitable rival for Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 and Motorola Droid.
