Amazon Kindle 2 ebook device cheaper Price in USA. Amazon has lowered the price of its best selling e-book reader, the Kindle 2, in response to the release of a Wi-Fi only version of the Barnes & Noble Nook, which now costs just $149 (£99).

Effective immediately, you can now pick up the Kindle 2 from Amazon’s website for just $189 (£125). That’s quite a bit cheaper than the previous price of $259.

Of course, Amazon will be happy to lower the price of the Kindle to ensure it remains price competitive in the relatively new e-book market. After all, the Kindle is a content device, and the vast majority of Amazon’s revenue from the Kindle comes not from the device itself, but the content sold through the store.

With the e-book market still in its infancy, it’s important that prices remain attractive, ensuring that the market continues to grow in the coming years. If consumers were priced out of the market entirely, we may see the end of e-book readers sooner rather than later.

Whether the sub-$200 price point will encourage more people to purchase a Kindle is yet to be seen, but it’s great to see that competition is driving prices down. Hopefully, we’ll see lower content prices too in the future, although this seems somewhat unlikely given the publisher’s viewpoint on this.

Google Goggles Makes Android Devices Mobile Translators. Google’s point-and-click translation tool on your mobile phone. Google has rolled out an expanded Google Goggles translation tool for Android devices using the image recognition technology of the service. The tool was originally introduced at the Mobile World Congress in February of this year in Barcelona. At the time only German could be recognized but with this roll out yesterday the service can now recognize English, French, Italian, German and Spanish and translate into many other languages. Google is currently working on expanding to more Latin-based languages and eventually aiming at other major languages like Chinese. It’s as simple as point, shoot and translate.

Here’s how it works:

• Point your phone at a word or phrase. Use the region of interest button to draw a box around specific words
• Press the shutter button
• If Goggles recognizes the text, it will give you the option to translate
• Press the translate button to select the source and destination languages.

Pretty cool. The example given is as simple as being able to read a menu item by taking a picture of it and letting Google tell you whether it’s what you thought it was. Just think how many waitrons will no longer have to deal with the “ugly American” syndrome of the completely inconsiderate notion that we don’t know every language on the planet. World wide peace may be available after all.

There is more to this release of Google Goggles (say that three times fast, by the way, and you’ll sound like you should be put in a psych ward) as the blog tells us

Every new release of Google Goggles contains at least one new feature and a large number of improvements to our existing functionality. In addition to translation, Goggles v1.1 features improved barcode recognition, a larger corpus of artwork, recognition of many more products and logos, an improved user interface, and the ability to initiate visual searches using images in your phone’s photo gallery.

This service works on any Android device running 1.6 or higher. I have not researched whether there are similar iPhone apps. Do you know of any? While this may not be even a tiebreaker to choose Android over the iPhone I suspect there will be more and more Android only services rolled out over time. In my opinion, the platform that provides the most utility v. the most gadgets will ultimately win. Interest in games and “attention diverters” only lasts so long while providing something that truly improves the quality of life will win the day in this mobile battle of titans.

After making its appearance at Verizon earlier today, Sprint also announced that the BlackBerry Curve 8530 smartphone is coming soon to its lineup as well. Potential customers can register now to receive updates on the handset. Preloaded apps are the primary difference for Sprint’s Curve 8530 and include the Sprint Music Store, Sprint TV and Pandora radio.

The 8530 is RIM’s entry-level media smartphone with dedicated music controls and quicker access to Facebook, MySpace and Flickr. Otherwise, the device has 3G EVDO network support, Wi-Fi, GPS and the by now de facto trackpad in place of a trackball. It cuts costs with a 320×240 display and a 2-megapixel camera.

Sprint will offer the BlackBerry Curve 8530 in black, purple and red. Pricing and a release date for the Sprint edition haven’t yet been announced.

Touchscreen mobile phones disappoint buyers: Touchscreen mobile phone user interfaces have some way to go before satisfying the needs of consumers, a survey has shown.

Phones with touchscreen user interfaces have become industry standard on high-end and mid-range models over the last few years, as consumers are seduced by claims that they are easier to use and more intuitive.

However, a poll conducted by Canalys indicates that the majority of buyers have been disappointed by their experiences.

Of the 3,000 Britons surveyed for the study, 53 per cent of those who already own a touchscreen phone said they would be going back to a more traditional keypad for their next handset purchase.

Pete Cunningham, senior analyst at Canalys, said that the findings show that it is “imperative that vendors focus on usability and practicality” and that they “continue to enhance their interfaces” to convince people of the merits of touchscreens.

He added: “There has always been a question mark over how well touchscreens would work among an SMS-centric audience, and the results indicate that the transition has not been totally smooth.”

The study did, however, also reveal that demand for touchscreens remains strong with 38 per cent of those polled saying that they seek out phones with finger-based touchscreen interfaces and 17 per cent looking for stylus-based touchscreen phones.
